Coral Reef Conservation
The AWARE - Coral Reef Conservation Specialty course is designed to inform divers and non-divers with the plight of world’s coral reefs. The course describes how coral reefs function and why they are so important. It also reviews why many reefs are in serious trouble and what individuals can do to prevent further decline.
This program is a non-diving course that only contains classroom presentations. We can conduct this program in your home as a stand-alone program or add it on to any other course.
Course Prerequisites
*To enroll in the Project AWARE Specialty program, participants need not be certified divers nor have any prior scuba or snorkeling experience.
*There is no minimum age requirement.

Required Materials
Each student diver must have a personal set of these materials for study and use during the course and for reference afterward:

Course Overview
This course is a non-diving course that begins with the students reading chapter 4 of the manual. Students will also watch the video Protect the Living Reef. This course will cover the following topics:
*An introduction to Project AWARE
*The importance of coral reefs to marine ecosystems and coastal areas
*Coral reef and reef inhabitant biology, association and competition
*The status of the world’s coral reefs and detrimental land-based and ocean-based activities that put reefs in peril
*Suggestions and information about actions that may help to protect reefs, including responsible diving and snorkeling practices
By completing and reviewing the program’s Knowledge Review, participants may earn the AWARE - Coral Reef Conservation Specialty certification.
